'Voyage of Strings' By Niladri Kumar I Brand Design


A global icon to reckon with, world renowned & 5th generation sitar player, Niladri Kumar is an unconventional rare instrumentalist, honing a unique repertoire and profound in depth understanding of traditional and classical styles on the sitar to innovative, electrifying renditions on his own instrumental innovation the 'zitar'. Hailed as one of the serious exponents of Indian classical music on one hand and reinventing the contemporary modern space on the other, the Zitar culturally redefined the way audiences viewed Indian classical music. 

Sound has waves, but his Zitar created ripples.

In designing the brand elements for his highly anticipated show in Dhaka, Voyage of Strings, the challenge lay in successfully visualizing how this unique brand of 'Zitar' is perceived by his listeners.

We decided to build around how Niladri's music, which is inviting, explosive and yet introspective, stimulates the mind. Brain mappings of a group of listeners were collected using an EMOTIV neuroheadset, which were then developed as the core visual elements for the designs. Photos of the artists performing at the event were embedded within these mappings to complete the design.

The developed visuals are symbolic of the wide range of emotions that the artist's music evokes within the mind of his audience: a conversation that is inherently chaotic in nature; inciting a concoction of emotions that words, more often than not, fail to articulate.
