How to fuse crochet's delicacy and cosiness with stainless steel's strength and PRACTICALITY?

Crochet is widely used in decoration, it evokes an image of a grandmother crocheting, comfort and cosiness. While many patterns are definitely granny-style, crochet is constantly being updated and modernized and atracting the attention of new generations. The goal in this design was to develop a line of stainless steel products that should be modern, delicate and cozy at the same time.

.
For whom

The products were designed focusing woman aged 35 to 45 years old. These women are empowered, take decisions on their own life, are economically independent and live mainly in urban areas. They also like to be feminine and add a feminine touch inside their homes.

The client was used to selling kitchen and tableware products only. This was the first time they were going to produce versatile items that could be used in different rooms like the office and the bathroom. They were taking a risk and the design should be developed within some production constraints such as:

1. The design should not require any specific tool (like mold tools) to be produced.
2. It should use only bending tools and laser cut.
3. It should be designed considering neutral colours only.
4. It could not take long hours to be laser cut.
5. It should be made of stainless steel only.

Ideation and Prototypes

Several studies were made aiming to develop versatile options. After presenting the options using 3D renders, the work with the company's engineers to maximise the use of the stainless steel sheets started. Lots of prototypes were made and evaluated in this process.
