Arsenals of Exclusion

An arsenal of exclusion is a weapon that can be used to keep people apart in cities. These arsenals of exclusion can be something that is obviously restrictive such at a raised sidewalk or one way streets. There are other ways to exclude people such as housing ordinances saying "people of color cant live here". These ordinances were not illegal in Baltimore until 1968 and what is left over are physical emblems of racial segregation which still exist.

I did design work figuring out a way to showcase these exclusionary tools during an urban design class at MICA. This work was later shown in Amsterdam at the 2010 design biennial.
