Michael and Emma's Place

A set of interior and exterior renders of a contemporary house with expansive garden.

July 2017
3ds Max | Vray | Marvelous Designer | Forest Pack | Railclone | Laubwerk | Photoshop
The Exteriors
The backside of the house, showing the garden, the main patio with view into the kitchen. The air is a bit moist and you can still see some fog in the bushes but you can tell it is going to be a glorious day.
Render with vray standard material in the vray override material, this is a great way of checking overall lighting without the distraction of textures. It is also great to show the actual geometry. In this case all of the exterior created with 3D Models.
I enhanced the sunny feel of this render by adding a lens flare from Vizpeople (V1 133) and some manual brush strokes
About the Lighting
I created the scene in 3ds max and rendered it with vray. The exterior lighting is done with vray sun and sky. For some of the images I increased the vray sun multiplier to soften the shadows a little. I enjoy the simplicity of this approach, currently I prefer it over HDRI for all good weather exteriors.
I placed the sun behind the building which meant the main pergola does not get too much light. I found the shadows created by the pergola and the reflection of the surroundings in the windows made it worthwhile.
This is one of the last renders I created, showing the second patio. I liked the causal and almost random feel of it, as if you had taken an image of a not carefully dressed up party of the house while taking a stroll through the garden.
With the exception of the pink ornamental grass (Evermotion) and the grass (Vizpark), all plants are models from Laubwerk. Most of them are scattered with Itoo Forest Pack Pro but I placed some trees and plants directly into my scene. A plane with high subdivisions and a noise modifier serves as surface for the grass object. The pebble and shrubs forest pack objects surrounding the building use their own plane surface which I edited using the freeform tools in 3ds max. The fence in the background was created using Railclone, I placed shrubs on either side of it, using splines and Forest pack.
Closeup of the props on the patio table. I liked the reflections of the garden in the window glass.
Another render of the central patio. The floor was done with the floor generator 2.0 plugin and maps from cg-source.com.
Flipping the camera, showing where the reflections are coming from. I used Itoo Railclone to quickly generate some basic neighbourhood houses, made from 3 splines and 3 Railclone objects: wall, roof and guttering.
The Interiors: Bedroom, corridor and kitchen
As in all my bedroom renders, I made the bedding with the Marvelous Designer cloth simulation software.
The colour scheme of the interior reflects the colours of the plants in the garden creating a feeling of harmony in the image.
The corridor looking into the Poliform kitchen.
The kitchen: High ceilings and large windows create an airy space.
