Unit: I began the project with a black letter on a white surface, cropping away pieces of the letter within a 20cm square. The study of the formal quality of the letter involves the removal of as much of the letter as possible, while leaving enough to ensure its identification. This part of the project brings into focus those qualities of a letter that make it different from others. It is not important to end up with a form that is immediately identifiable; it is enough to ensure that, after a process of elimination, the remaining form could not be derived from any other letter. The final composition should also have roughly equal amounts of black and white, figure/ground, form/counterform.
Pattern: The next step was to generate a pattern of 4 units, and to pay attention to the complexity of relationships within the pattern. The final stages of this project will include a 16-unit pattern.
