What makes us scream?
In Munch’s version, it was the power of nature. In my mind, it is the disaster initiated and suffered by human beings.
I can still remember the heartbreaking moment one year ago when I saw the shocking image of a drowned Syrian boy on the beach. However, memory fades away easily. Years later, things do not seem to have changed much.
When I was creating a digital painting in honor of The Scream by using a new set of Munch’s brushes, I wanted to create something not only for the eyes, but also for the minds. It should have a story behind. It should have an impact. Just like Munch’s original work did.
So I want to remind ourselves our mission with my work.
Instead of smoke from volcano eruption, I depicted smoke brought by bombs.
Instead of flowing water alone,
I depicted ships with refugees who were forced to leave their home.
Instead of clear shoreline, I added fences.
Instead of a scared face in the foreground,
I related it to a crying soul of that child on the beach.
Looking at the 5th Scream, one immediately senses the anxiety: the flaming colors, the flowing strokes, the twisted figure… we can still feel that pain and agony with meaning behind.
That crying soul could be you and me, if we do not take actions. All human beings are in this together. We should join hands to shoulder our due responsibilities to create for our children a better future without war and crying.
