In creating the “Militant as Fuck” series my goal was to bring attention to the consistent role Black Empowerment has played in music through the years. I wanted to highlight a variety of struggles with the songs I chose and to also showcase that music is an art form much like that of painting or illustration. I also want my audience to walk away from my series with a new interest in music and its relationship to the Black community.

The inspiration for this project came from the never-ending parade of death in social media including the deaths that sparked the Black Lives Matter Movement as well as prominent historical protests that took place in the past. 2016 was the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party and that also played a major role in my work in conjunction with my artistic idols including Aaron Douglas, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Augusta Savage, Carrie Mae Weems and Kara Walker. There is an element of inspiration from all of these artists.
