Public health dashboard for Broadreach Healthcare

Broadreach Healthcare aggregates private and public healthcare data, creating dashboards for public servants to understand performance and identify opportunities. They needed a whole new design system that make it easy for non-data savvy users to see, understand and act on data.

We started as always, by researching users and their needs. The users work in the Department of Health in various provinces around South Africa. The data came from many sources and many geographies so our biggest task was to create a new information architecture and user journeys to navigate around it. We clustered the data into sectors (Health, Education, etc) and areas (province > municipality > ward).

Using the principle of data density we created cards (to hold a small piece of info), buckets (a collection of cards), and boards (a collection of buckets). These modular components allowed flexibility and consistency across the system, and enabled future plans for personalisation.

We then created wireframes which we tested with users. Based on all of this, I created a graphic system for them the client to develop.

While users used to spend months preparing for meetings, now they just loaded the interface on screen and talked around that.
The dashboard allowed users to pin cards and boards for easy access.

The boards were a collection of buckets and cards. Below we see a holistic report on Ward 52. These specialised boards are set up by Broadreach as templates.

A detailed page allows users to interact directly with the data.
