PORTRAITS OF YOUTH

Our childhood was fragile. We grew up fast and we grew up quicker than most. You had to live like that, or else you'd be six feet under. Whether it be pointing a loaded pistol towards a man you call father in order to protect the ones you love, or going hungry most nights; that was just how it was. We never had time to dwell in the past or else we'd be too sad to fathom the reality that we lived. I tried my best to shield my younger siblings from what I lived through, but there were cracks and dents in my effort.
I look into my sisters eyes and it is like looking into my own.
They are haunted with memories. Memories that I know all to well.
This project for me, was showing the burden of the past and the way it weighs down on my younger sisters shoulders. She is still a child but now she has a history that I hope one day that she will feel empowered by, I hope one day at the high hill of old age, she can look back and say,
 "I've made it."
