TA Form Redesign for IDC, IIT Bombay

The ‘Teaching Assistance Form’ (shown below) was being given to students every month at IDC to fill and get signed by the faculty in order to receive the stipend. Although the form was doing its job, we realised that it could be redesigned in a way that not only would look well-structured to all students, faculty members but also make the process of filing them easier for the office staff.

Design Challenges

1. Size of the form should remain the same: A5

2. Designed form should help both Senior & Junior Master of Design students

(a common form has been used for several years).

3. Form should be easily reproduced through a photocopier.

4. The lesser ink used in production the better.

Design Iterations

• Hierarchy of information was created through re-shuffling the order of required 'criteria' keeping in mind the order in which students and IDC office would navigate through the form.

• Use of bold, regular and condensed fonts help in creating similarity among specific points which further helps in improving the overall navigation of the user.

• Two separate forms were designed for Senior & Junior M.Des. students containing only the necessary and applicable information for each of them.

• Designed form is black & white which works best for cost-effective small scale in-house reproduction.

Design journey

Final Design

• After testing of forms, more space was assigned for students to write their full names.

• M.Des. class was moved to the centre of header so that selection of forms becomes easier for students.

• Section to specify the 'month' was moved to the right side of header to make it prominent for the staff in office above the 'roll number' section. It helps while shuffling through a bundle of forms.

• All columns follow the designed grid structure and align perfectly with each other.
