Imaginary Nations for a perfect World

From the series “Nations”, oil and pencil on paper, 35 x 45 cm, 2011 / 2015.

In these drawings I create a map of an imaginary nation. The invention starts with the tracking on a perimeter that is the boundary. Within this boundary, with colored backgrounds, dashes and symbols, I can create new meanings and hierarchies between the various areas. But of course, everything is invented, and the more I can get away from real cartographic representations, the more the original significance weakens and gives way to new, unexpected interpretations.
The point that originally represented the position of a city on the map can grow up to become a big bubble colored and decorated with new symbols, the tracks indicating roads and paths can be deformed and can be enriched with textures and hatches that change the meaning, the same boundary may vary in different parts of the map, becoming thick or thin, light or dark, hard and defined or changeable and permeable.
The final result is no longer about the geography of a place, but rather the representation of something abstract, like a memory, a mood or an emotion.
I was born in 1971 in Turin, Italy, where I live and work as an artist. My main artistic technique is the use of classic oil colours, associated with other media and materials, such as pencil, coloured pencils, charcoal, inks and industrial paints. I mainly paint on fine art white paper or on cotton canvases.  Usually my work proceeds with the sedimentation of several layers, one after the other. And often each drawing or painting, also if it is sold alone,  belongs to a wider series of works. In each series I try to explore and study a peculiar aspect of representation, decoration and languages. Once ended, the painting is finished with a coat of UV varnish to protect against sunlight and dust. The canvases are painted on the sides too, so they are ready to hang. I have sold my works on several online galleries (saatchiart.com, zatista.com, artfinder.com, redbubble.com, etsy.com, society6.com, teepublic.com, cupick.com, postergully.com, ebay.it). My sold works are never rolled but always packed flat. I put them between two sheets of acid free paper with paper or cardboard protection for the corners, than close in a plastic envelope. The envelope is stiffen with a sheet of polystyrene on both sides, and the whole thing is completed with layers of cardboard. The package is also protected with bubble packaging inside. Usually the artwork is shipped in 2/3 days after receiving the payment. All my artworks are original unique paintings, signed. Certificate of Authenticity included.
