Birdhouse Tenements

The free movement of people has been a contested topic since Brexit and the Trump administration.
I created a series of birdhouses as I wanted to convey the idea that a 'home' is not necessarily where you are born, but can be anywhere that you decide to make it.
I have had the freedom to choose to make my home in Edinburgh because I am an EU citizen, something that will now be affected by Brexit.
Birds are migratory animals, and I wanted to reflect on how humans also undertake migratory patterns to an extent.
Migration is a natural occurence in the animal kingdom and we are not so far removed as to not subscribe to it.

I based my birdhouses on real Edinburgh buildings, specifically in the Leith area where I have personally taken up residence.

The birdhouses were installed as part of the Pissed Modernism political art group show.
This birdhouse has a detachable base so the light inside can be switched on
The birdhouses are made of MDF and are painted with acrylic, and include real-life graffiti from the Leith area
I also created a pair of accompanying two-colour illustrated risograph prints
