The BIG Dr Mundo Rework

||FOREWORD||
I did this project as part of a very long interview process for a job. I really enjoyed working on it, but not getting the job was kind of disheartening after I'd invested so much time in it. What I've uploaded here only scratches the surface of the amount of work that I produced for this project...I'm talking pages and pages of my A3 sketchpad filled with hundreds of little (and big) Dr. Mundo sketches. You can't even begin to understand how many Dr. Mundo's I drew...It's not perfect by any means but as my first real venture into the world of character concept art I think I did fine and it was a valuable experience which I think ultimately helped me level up a lot and whet my appetite for a career in character art.

Dr Mundo Rework Part I
Dr Mundo is one of my favourite characters in the League of Legends universe. He's also one of the oldest which means that he's long over due a visual update. So I decided to rework him. This was the first concept I did of about 10. It was a great challenge and I feel like I came out of the other side a better artist for it.
Dr Mundo Rework Concept II
This concept played with the idea of Dr. Mundo transforming. Therefore, I wanted to create a slightly more normal looking version of him for his regular form that would help to demonstrate how much he changes upon transformation.
In the end I tried to combine the syringe typically seen in Dr.Mundo's shoulder/neck area, with an electric collar that would electrocute him. This was supposed to help sell the idea that he relished pain and that he could endure a lot of it. In this iteration, the electric shock from the collar triggers his transformation.
Dr Mundo Rework Part III
Another variation that incorporated the shock collar was this one. Mundo's kit is fairly simple and not very ergonomic. In this one I tried to further develop his game play and make it more unique compared to other champions. The idea was that he used a combination of potions/medication in syringe form. This was a a nod to his original design that featured a syringe in his neck whilst making a prominent change to the kit which added to his story and character. Each syringe would have some sort of symbol on it that hinted at what it did when used. One for super regeneration (the cross) and one for increased AD (the fist). In hindsight, the "lightning bolt" syringe should have possibly been a flame instead leaving his shock collar as a completely separate ability which triggered him to perhaps have access to more brutal attacks such as throwing his cleaver (formerly his Q).
Dr Mundo Rework Part IV
I did this next concept a bit quicker than some of the others but I think it may be one of the best. Dr Mundo's transformation in this one is far more extreme than the others and is very different to his current appearance in game. The shock collar remains with an electrical node in the spot where his syringe usually is. The nodes on his body end up sparking when he transforms. Because Mundo is somewhat addicted to pain, his clothing is sewed onto him. It's a bit basic but also perhaps a bit too much for someone who is also goofy. Dr Mundo also isn't particularly "techy" so I would dial back certain elements of this now (e.g. his weapon is way too sci-fi looking).
Below is a bunch of other stuff that I couldn't be bothered to organise into more sections (because it was getting a bit far to scroll down). But you can see Mundo goes from looking punk to mutated to Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde.
