Illustrations '12 Things you didn't see coming in 2016'

Principals: A Year in Review editorial illustrations

Part of an editorial titled ‘12 things you didn’t see coming’ I produced 5 stills – that also became animations which spoke to significant events over the last decade:
1. The immensely popular Pokémon Go
2. Donald Trump being president of the USA as well as Time Magazine's man of the year
3. Mitsubishi's carbon footprint and high gas omissions.
4. How 3 underdog teams won their first championship in their respective sports code
5. The Rise of Siri and artificial Intelligence.

Each illustration shows an idea, within an idea to tell a much bigger picture. By using negative space and a super simple illustration style. I wanted these 5 pieces to say more than one message the longer you look at it. The results were published online, through social media and in print.

1. Go! Pokemon Go

This illustration celebrates Pokemon Go, the game that transformed and reimagined the world of app gaming. The illustration shows Pikachu – however his eyes and mouth reveal a person with an iPhone attempting to capture him in his iPhone Pokéball.
2. Crown of Horns

This illustration paid tribute to Donald Trump and the day he became the president of the United States of America. The fist doubles up as gritted teeth to illustrate his fiery personality and tendency to simply speak how he feels – he's a real hot head. The 'M' also pays tribute to his portrait on the cover of Time Magazine – it looked like the devil's horns.
3. Mitsubishi – up in smoke

This illustration shows a car with its engine bonnet looking like a factory which is letting off large plumes of carbon monoxide gas. It illustrates how Mitsubishi manipulated the truth behind the amount of gas omissions their cars and factories gave off – being lot more than they claimed which became a serious environmental problem as well as affecting the brand's reputation.
4. The year of the underdog

This is my favourite illustration. It celebrates a year when 3 underdog sports teams won their first championships in their respective codes:

1. The Western Bulldogs (winning their first AFL championship)
2. The Leicester City Foxes (winning their Premier League title)
3. Cronulla Sharks (winning their first NRL premiership title)

The illustration shows a bulldog silohuette with a fox in the negative space. The football makes the eye. And finally shark (with an Australian football for an eye) marks the bulldog's spiked collar. Blue is the colour each team had in common.
5. Robots in disguise

The final illustration talks about the rise of artificial intelligence and how it has become an integrated part of our lives – its ability to speak like a human, respond to human commands in an organic way. Siri was the perfect example of a major AI shift (followed by Alexa and Google Home). I simply personified Siri as a man to show ambiguity. His face is made up of the most familiar symbols on smart phones (Siri's voice waves, the microphone symbol, the speaker and face camera and thumbprint symbol).
