New Venture Competition: 20 Years

Since 1997, Harvard Business School has held the New Venture Competition, an annual contest for entrepreneurs to gain exposure and secure funding from alumni and industry professionals. In its twenty years, nearly 5,000 participants representing nearly 2,000 teams have competed.

To honor this milestone, we created a book detailing its history and listing all past winners and runners-up throughout the entire twenty-year run of the competition.

Content collection and collation played a significant role in the production of this book. The Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise Initiative, the two departments who sponsor the competition, conducted a survey of past participants, from which I chose the best quotes and advice.

Additionally, we did an exhaustive audit of any photography in our archives and the Baker Library Historical Collections of the New Venture Competition.
By highlighting memories with photo spreads and advice with orange splash pages, we humanized and personalized the competition.

The 20th New Venture Competition was held on April 25, 2017.
