Mapping A Renewed Interest in Green Island
The first man-made island in the Arabian Gulf was inaugurated in 1988 in the state of Kuwait. With an area of 785,000 square meters and a diameter of 314km, the aerial view of the island recalls Greek historian and geographer Hecataeus of Miletus’ early map of the world. Green Island, as this special place is called, is connected to the mainland of Kuwait. It is surrounded with rocks and a beach area imposing itself into the water.
When walking on the island I discovered unique geometric shapes of architectural structures, amongst empty sidewalks and abundant vegetation. Green Island has been known for its outdoor activities including a children’s playground, a train to ride around the island, bicycles for rent and walking paths.
After viewing the location, its condition and the possibilities, I could envision the space to be used for a triathlon event. Currently Kuwait hosts several marathons a year along the Gulf Road so I see this space utilized as a custom triathlon course, with water for swimming, land for running and paths for cycling.
My final presentation is printed on acrylic and divided into four separate layers. The first layer represents the contour of the island, the second holds the architectural structures, and the third contains elements added to the island for a visitors’ use. The fourth and final layer is my projection for the triathlon course. The metal connector holding the layers together allows users to spin and see each individual layer. When the layers are all spread out, the composition resembles a view of the world in outer space.
