My first concert shoot took place last year, October 31st. I was given the chance to photograph my seniors performing for our club's annual concert, with 2011's theme being 'Summer Beat'. The experience taught me a lot about photographing in low light conditions and on the whole, it opened me up to a new style of photography that utilised negative space. Many of the images below – which comprise of either silhouettes or incomplete shapes –gave the subjects (my seniors) a great deal of emphasis by taking away most of the natural distractions, and I felt it helped bring out a different perspective of taiko drumming as more than just hitting a skin, but also the emotions felt and actions done whilst performing.
