An Existentialist's Fata Morgana

“Fata morgana” is an Italian term used to describe a type of powerful mirage, or in this case, an unattainable goal. The fata morgana of an existentialist, as is described in Kierkegaard’s proposition of The Absurd, is to fully understand the universe and to find a place in it. In my piece, the subject is holding an orb full of stars in her hands. This is supposed to represent the universe, or existence, contained and condensed into a tangible, graspable object; harnessing “the liquid fray of consciousness”. The third eye indicates a godlike understanding, and the planets surrounding her suggest that she has a place in the universe.
