The non-profit organization, Smart Therapy, is the culmination of my research exploring the use of art therapy as part of the treatment plan for those affected by dementia. Art therapy plays an important role in providing a language for those who find it difficult or impossible to express their thoughts and feelings with words. When it comes to cognitive impairments, art therapy has the power to connect people with dementia to their families and caregivers through the language of art.
Smart Therapy packaged products are designed so that the outer layer or ‘mask’ is grey, partially concealing the colour beneath it. When the top packaging/outer layer is removed, the full colour is revealed, much the same way that art therapy helps bring hidden thoughts and feelings to the surface. It was also important that there was a pharmaceutical appearance to the products to represent the significant role that art therapy can play in treatment planning.
The coloured pencils are contained in blister packs, commonly used for medications, and the inks and paints are in pharmaceutical bottles.
The proceeds from purchases of Smart Therapy products go towards research, and funding art-based programs for those with dementia, and their families and caregivers.
