Sliced! 3D Pattern Play

As I really enjoy experimenting within set rules and find limitations quite refreshing, I challenged myself to create a series of repeatable seamless patterns from 3D objects created purely in Adobe Illustrator based on the tools & techniques I cover in my Skillshare class Creating & Using Custom 3D Objects in Illustrator.

When I set off with this challenge I had a vague idea what style of objects I want to create, using a limited colour palette and abstract patterns to art-map the 3D shapes (you can see a lot of this style in the class trailer video below). But then I got really excited by using a slicing style, combining only 2 colours and concentrated on juxtaposing glossy and soft matte textures.
So far I've created 7 repeatable patterns with this style of objects, and if you like watching making-of videos, there's one for you below, please enjoy!;)

Experimenting with 3D objects in Illustrator is good fun and it's a great starting point for anyone who never worked with 3D before, so don't hesitate to check out my Skillshare class Creating & Using Custom 3D Objects in Illustrator. Get 1 month of Skillshare Membership for FREE if you are a new Skillshare member and sign up using this link!
