Why a Wellness/Treatment Center?
The Wellness/Treatment Center serves as a fitness center for healthy individuals as well as a physical and occupational therapy center. In addition, it provides salon/spa services and child care. This combination of services helps address a range of health and wellness needs in the community from recovery from injuries to fitness and personal grooming. In our culture, jobs and lifestyles are ever more sedentary and stressful giving rise to physical and mental health issues such as: obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression and anxiety. Regular exercise is known to reduce incidence of all of these diseases and spa services are also known to help relieve stress. In addition, most people will experience multiple injuries over a lifetime that require physical or occupational therapy including: back and neck pain, joint pain/ injury in knees, hips, shoulders, elbows or hands. In today’s society, with over-scheduled and busy lives people benefit from comprehensive services to make healthy living more convenient. By providing a single destination that provides all of these health and wellness services as well as child care individuals will experience a reduction in stress and be empowered to take better care of themselves.
Concept & Parti
The design concept is to bring nature’s power of healing into the spaces by bringing daylight, natural views and colors, and healthy and natural materials into the building.
The design parti was developed in reaction to the existing geometry of the building. The diagonal lines of the new composition were generated from the original angles of the building and serve to unify the whole. This geometry is expressed in the folded wood planes that also serve to distinguish the major functions from one another.
Location
The building selected for this adaptive reuse project is the Haverford Community Center just outside of Philadelphia, PA. The building was selected because of its prime suburban location and its setting in nature, with easy access to parks and hiking/running trails. The setting encourages a physically active lifestyle and helps reduce stress through nature’s power to heal.
