Body Lotion Packaging

The intent of the project is to make a packaging that reflect the design innovation and experience for the user.
The brief given was to design a packaging for consumer goods, toy or hand tools.Understand the Company & the Product, Understand the Target Audience, Pin Down the Packaging Requirements. Clarify the Production Details, Choose the Right Materials (Select materials that work with your concept, fit the design requirements and fall within the desired budget), Set the Right Design Direction. (The more information you have the better equipped you will be to deliver). Keeping in mind forms, shapes, material, branding, shelf impact, stack ability and surface graphics.

IDEATION
The idea chosen was body lotion packaging. The whole idea was to enhance the user experience of the body lotion and find solutions to the problems faced by the existing body lotion packaging.

TARGET
The target audience is from 18-45 age group. Mostly targeting travellers. As they body lotion are mostly used by females and females are they buyer, hence women are going to be the target.

COMPETITORS
All the body lotion brands.

PROBLEMS
> Very difficult to use the lotion at the bottom. User has to cut the bottle at the end.
> Hygiene issues. While applying the lotion enters the nails.
> Not a travel friendly packaging.
> Sometimes extra lotion comes out.
> Difficult to squeeze the bottle.
> Application sometimes gets messy.

> The user can’t see the amount of lotion left in the bottle.

PROPOSED DESIGN AND SOLUTION
A body lotion bottle with better curve and grip. The bottle with a roller which is easier and cleaner to use. The roller would be easily washable, which hence is hygienic. The bottle would mainly be for personal use and would be travel friendly. The bottle would be easily squeezable which will avoid wastage. The design is cost efficient too.
The bottle would have a transperent strip through which the user can see the amount of lotion left in the bottle

ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWING

MANUFACTURING PROCESS
1. Granules of plastic powder (note the plastics listed above) are poured or fed into a hopper which stores it until it is needed.
2. A heater heats up the tube and when it reaches a high temperature a screw thread starts turning.
3. A motor turns a thread which pushes the granules along the heater section which melts then into a liquid. The liquid is forced into a mould where it cools into the shape.
4. The mould then opens and the unit is removed.

PROTOTYPING
The prototyping has been done using 3D printing , m-seal, steel wire and plastic pipe.
The process was to first model the design and export it in STL format. Then using the cura software the 3d printing was done. The filament used for 3d printing was made of Polylactic acid (PLA).
Later the roller was made using M-seal, Steel wire and a plastic pipe.
