Verbal communication behavior changed since people started to use smartphones. Instead of talking to each other face to face or having phone calls, they rather type endless messages via WhatsApp or iMessage – free of charge and without any character limits. And if this wasn't enough, the messenger softwares propose the words and phrases to be typed using the auto-correct spelling option to complete sentences.

So I asked myself: How far is it possible to write a message without thinking about the content? In my experiment, I pretended to apologize to someone by typing the word „sorry“ – but left the reason for my excuse to my smartphone. I clicked through the suggested phrases of my text messenger until more or less meaningful sentences appeared. This short movie shows the process and live reactions of my probands.

Unser verbales Kommunikationsverhalten hat sich seit Verbreitung des Smartphones stark verändert. Statt Sachverhalte persönlich oder telefonisch zu klären, greifen viele zum Handy und tippen lieber endlose Nachrichten. Dank Apps wie iMessage oder WhatsApp kostet das nichts und die Zeichenanzahl ist auch unbegrenzt. Aber damit nicht genug – das Smartphone greift uns auch inhaltlich unter die Arme und korrigiert nicht nur Tipp- und Rechtschreibfehler automatisch, sondern schlägt ganze Sätze vor. Diesem Phänomen bin ich auf den Grund gegangen und habe mich gefragt, inwieweit es möglich ist, eine Nachricht zu schreiben, ohne sich über den Inhalt Gedanken machen zu müssen.

In meinem Experiment habe ich getestet, was passiert, wenn man sich bei einer Person entschuldigt, den Grund dafür aber das Smartphone bestimmen lässt. Ich habe Worte wie „Entschuldigung“ oder „Sorry“ ins Textfeld getippt und mich anschließend ohne weiteren Eingriff durch die Wörter der Vorschlagsliste geklickt, bis mehr oder minder sinnvolle Sätze herauskamen. Das ganze habe ich gefilmt – inklusive live Reaktionen der Gesprächspartner.
