The tea comes from Tibet (China). It was known by the Chinese for being a soothing, stimulating and comforting drink in the cold days of the region.
Buddhist monks take tea to Japan.
Monks drank tea to stay awake during the long sessions of zazen (meditation).
Their properties helped them stay awake during the long nights.
The time to take was turned into a ceremony. The chanoyu.
With the maritime expansion of the Europeans the spice reaches the west. It starts the export trade to Portugal, France, England.
In England one gains more emphasis. This from the marriage of the Portuguese princess Catarina de Bragança with Carlos II of England in 1661

5 o'clock tea
But tea afternoons were only known in England with Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford, 1840. An influential woman in 19th century English society.
