Fiction: the endangered species - zine

Fiction: the endangered species is a zine that comments on and exposes fictional characters that inhabit the city. It is a mixed media artwork that collages photography, illustration, design and traditional art techniques. The artwork showcases various fictional characters that inhabit the city accompanied by short narratives to motivate the imagery. Each character has a personality that is unique to its existence and experience within the space it exists in the city. The zine explores discourse such as phenomenology, flânerie, cyber culture, tradition, politics and death to name but a few. Photography was collaged to generate the landscape and architecture for each character to inhabit whilst traditional drawing techniques and digital illustration was used to generate the characters and textures on each page. Typography was used as a dominant design element to illustrate a narrative in order to communicate the imagery to the audience and establish a sense of layout within the zine. The zine is bound using a Japanese stab binding technique to retain the industrial feel of the artwork. Fictions are all around us, all the time; we as artist have the power to bring them to life.
