This project was for a module for M.Arch. programme, first year, 'Realities in Architecture' in which we focused on dementia and how architecture can improve the daily lives of people with dementia. The site is St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, used for elderly people care and includes a dementia ward. Our project required us to redesign an open space within the hospital group to encourage family visits, facilitate patients to use the space independently and using a horticulture environment to provide activities during the day.

The concept, entitled 'Village Garden' brings together the idea of home and a piazza by means of a multisensory garden with a variety of activities and uses throughout the space. These include social areas, a cafe, horticultural area and a quiet area in front of the chapel. The various spaces are connected through a continuous path that facilitates movement through space. The spaces include memory triggers that can help dementia patients be independent through circadian orientation.

This was a group project between Rebecca Bezzina, Christabelle Borge Muscat, Chelsea Sciortino and myself.
