After viewing a frightening episode of The Nature of Things, called Tipping Point (narrated by the well known Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki), I was motivated to try and raise awareness for the human element of the oil sands story.
Yes, the oil is dirty. Yes, the process in shamefully inefficient. Yes, there are political implications that cross borders and generate heated debates. However, we often forget the people. We are digging up someone's home province, and poisoning them in the process.
Oil sands production is scheduled to triple by the end of this decade, and the devastation it causes the environment is just the beginning.
