Full Color Technical Drawing

The project was to choose an item and create a full color technical exploded view of that item. I chose to do an exploded view of a Hamilton Beach Juicer.  The first step was to create some sketches based on the photos that I took of the juicer:

First Work in Progress was about getting the base drawing down on an isometric grid:  I started out by using an isometric grid but I felt like the grip was really throwing me off and hindering my ability to get the circles an the right proportion. I turned off the grid and had a much easier time.  I think that the hardest part of doing the base drawing was the juicer lid. This one was a little tricky since it was transparent. I had to redraw that one a few times to get it right.

Second Work in Progress was about apply some basic color and shading to the base drawing. I really didn't have that much trouble with the shading. I had to redraw some shapes over again to break the item into pieces that were shaded different.

Final Drawing with all coloring and shading complete: I had the hardest time shading the transparent pieces. Once I got the pulp container shading down, I moved onto the lid. The lid was the most difficult because of the several layers of transparency on it. It took me the most time just to add small areas of gradient one at a time to get the shading and light source to look the same on all the pieces

This is an example of how this illustration would be used in the instruction booklet that comes with the juicer. The booklet also features tips, techniques and some simple juicing recipes.
