Understanding The Definition And Role Of Sap Enterprise

SAP stands for Systems, Applications & Products is an enterprise software manufacturer that helps manage business operations and customer relations. Their Enterprise Service software is used all around the world by major corporations.

The term Enterprise Services, as defined by the SAP Terminology Guide, relates to a standards-based way of encapsulating enterprise functionality and exposing it as a reusable business service that can be combined with other services to meet new requirements. Enterprise services can be assembled together to compose new applications or enable new business processes.

Enterprise services are the services that are quite productive in automating business processes in enterprise computing.

What matters in an enterprise services is its scope of use. It is important because if too much functionality is included in a service, it becomes complicated to reuse. If too little functionality of the services are included then the applications that use them become too complicated to manage. It involves sophisticated engineering efforts to design services that are the right scope.

Let us try and understand what are some of the common SAP Enterprise Services?

An SAP Enterprise service is technically a Web Service which has the outlined attributes, as stated under:

Web Services standards of WSDL and SOAP.

SAP Global Data Types.

SAP ER or Service Registry.

What determines an Enterprise Service?

There are two elements that determine SAP in today’s enterprises. Most customers are not too clear on the SAP SOA guidelines or how to model them in a realistic manner, which is why there are specific software models that are designed and developed to meet with the enterprise level services.

Service-oriented Architecture or SOA:

Service-Oriented Architecture has been around for a little while and its implementation across industries is still being examined, such as in the banking and financial services sector. The SOA is a term that pertains to the underlying support structure of communication among various work units, that are commonly referred as ‘Services.’ These services carry out small functions, such as producing data, validating a customer, providing simple analytical services, and the like.

These services are implemented on behalf of entities, for example human users or individual applications. The SOA clarifies the interaction between these entities and allows them to perform designated services with one another.

In Service-oriented Architecture, SOA, there is a producer or provider, and also a consumer. The two are separated by a virtual bridge which is the network. The prime attention is how the two parties interact with each other to service the customer.

Web Service:

A Web Service is an interface that implements the standards of SOAP and WSDL (including HTTP) which utilizes a whole range of functionalities adopted by a Web Service consumer.

The usage of Web Services allows a direct integration between applications with the SAP Business Suite. It acts as a central integration strategy for all integration related initiatives.
