Ilyas Munshi's profile

Rush University's First Symposium on Research

A neurosurgeon with more than 15 years of experience, Ilyas Munshi, MD, treats patients at his private practice in Lafayette, Louisiana. Dr. Ilyas Munshi studied medicine at Rush Medical College in Chicago, which recently held its first symposium on research and diversity.

The Rush Medical College symposium took place during the 34th annual Rush University Forum for Research and Clinical Investigation. As part of the college's Initiative to Maximize Student Development (IMSD), the symposium featured presentations by residents, students, and postdoctoral research fellows who either came from underrepresented minority groups in science or were working on topics related to diversity in biomedical research.

The symposium coordinators received 27 submissions for presentations, five of which were selected on the basis of scientific merit. The presentations covered topics such as barriers to clinical study recruitment in the African-American community and issues related to the regulation of cancer cell growth. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, Rush IMSD promotes diversity and inclusion in the college’s PhD in integrated biomedical sciences program.
