1.  PROBLEM

"It's safe to argue that plastic will never biodegrade."  (William Harris)

Plastic products are very common in our daily life. However, few people know that it takes about 500-1000 years for a plastic bag to decompose. Plastic waste is one of many types of wastes that takes too long to decompose because it cannot be easily biodegraded by bacteria like the organic waste.

2. RESEARCH

I started my research wondering why it takes so long for plastics to decompose, and what happens with the growing plastic waste on the planet. In terms of the long process of the biodegradation, the blame is on its chemical composition. Most plastics are derived from propylene, a simple component of petroleum. They are formed with extremely strong carbon-carbon bonds which makes it hard to be biodegraded by nature. After disposed of, these materials can do nothing other than polluting ecosystems and harming wildlife.

3. CONCEPT

Inspired by a TED-Ed lesson by Emma Bryce, which traces the life cycles of three different plastic bottles, shedding light on the dangers these disposables present to our world, I decided to show the causes and results of plastic pollution by a flow chart, telling a story about how plastic products are made and what happen when they are disposed.
