I'm OCD like that - a mental health awareness project

A current problem facing mental health in today’s society is the trivialisation of having a mental illness, to the point where it is seemingly considered a quirk or an accessory among young people; something to make them more interesting. The most significant example of this has been the trivialisation of OCD in which people would often claim to have the illness in passing or as a joke because they have Anal retentive traits, ultimately dismissing the true nature of people with OCD and minimising their experience.

Because this is such a current and pressing issue, I have taken it upon myself to convince people to stop using language such as ‘I’m OCD like that’ when referring to normal character traits such as keeping tidy. Using a white on white colour scheme to show the perceived idealised cleanliness of living with OCD I had a subject depict a verity of actions, starting with basic habits that are often misconstrued as symptoms of the disorder. I then built up the actions, showing the repetitiveness and stress related to the true face of OCD that people seem to trivialise when they make remarks about having it for meaningless reasons. To further that point I had the term ‘I’m OCD like that’ repeat throughout the film, satirising the use of the remark and highlighting the sensitive nature of the topic.
