YCN - BEAR Diving Academy

The oceans cover 71 percent of the Earth’s surface so it’s pretty important. Also I believe that the ocean provides so much interest and mystery to everyone. It is something also that we need to look after, with a rise in overfishing issues, plastic pollution and coral reef bleaching we need to all turn our eyes to the oceans and appreciate the variety of life that it has to offer.

This is why I have created BEAR diving academy. BEAR is head of his own academy in charge of protecting and researching all marine life from around the world. His HQ is a huge submarine which he runs with the help of his cadets, the children who by BEAR products.
Each of the cards is a different species that can be found at different depths within the oceans. The information provided on the back of the cards is minimal but fun. I included where the animal can be found, a small fact file with the type of fish, diet, size, depth they live and their rarity. The rarity of the card will depend on the rarity of the species itself.

With minimal text and lots of colourful imagery, the cards create something worth collecting so that eventually, children can collect all of the animals in the BEAR diving academy’s log.
The website itself is designed to be similar to bears current website in the fact that it is fully interactive. It shows BEAR in action in the control room of the BEAR sub. Each object within the control room will click through to a new activity for children to enjoy. For example, I have shown the periscope could be used to show the view of the water surface and the wet suit could be a link to the game.

Throughout the campaign, more rooms of the submarine would open up as the children gained ranks within the BEAR Diving Academy. This means their efforts are rewarded with the ability to explore more.
As part of the website, I created a game to allow members of the BEAR diving academy to gain ranks. Every medal they gain will be collected in order to ‘level up’ from a Diving cadet to a fully fledged BEAR diver.

The aim of the game is to take as many pictures of unique species as possible before the time runs out. You simply click on a creature to take a picture.

As the levels progress the game gets harder - Level 1 is in coral reefs with plenty of fish, Level 2 is in the open sea which has less fish and Level 3 is in the depths so a torch is needed.
I propose a partnership with the Sealife centres in the UK so that children can see the creatures of the cards in the flesh. Nothing is more educational on this subject for children than a visit to an aquarium.

The partnership could be through winning tickets to go to Sealife centres through the use of a unique code in each BEAR pack or through collecting all of the BEAR diving academy cards themselves.
