The objective of this still life was to utilize the brown paper provided as a middle-value color, build up the black charcoal for a darker value, and lay over the white charcoal for highlights. The theme of this still life is what one would find in a veteran’s trunk of wartime paraphernalia. It begins to tell a story when the viewer focuses first upon the Russian gas mask and combat boot. The snaking hose leads to the right where journals and a stuffed bear switch the mood of the drawing to a sense of curiosity. The lasting impression makes the audience want to learn more about the backstory behind the selected objects.
