Overview
The premise of this project was to select a rhetorical speech from; film, TV, a
speech, a comedy or poetry performance etc. The only limitation was that it must not include music because it takes away from the speaker. The objective was to invoke Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to our audience by communicating with them using the rhetorical speech and kinetic typography.
Project Details
When this project was given to me, I knew right away that I wanted to use this interview of Denzel Washington. At the time it was all over social media and creating a lot of buzz. This clip was taken from an interview at the premiere of his film, "Fences". Denzel was asked questions about "fake news" and the role it played in the 2016 election.
Denzel speaks for a short period of time but manages to hit a handful of points within that time period. He was asked only two questions and took off with them, cutting off this reporter in some cases. I loved this interview because of the passion in what he was saying.
Design
I limited myself to only two fonts, one for the reporter, and one for Denzel. Amatic SC was the font I used for the reporter. It is a light, simple font that matches her timid voice. For Denzel, I used Libre Baskerville. Baskerville is a great serif font that looks a little more aggressive.
Denzel speaks with different emotion and different speeds at certain points. This allowed me to visualize his emotion using things such as; altering the size of text, speed of words animating, colour, etc.
The original design began with a solid light blue background, instead, I chose to apply a radial gradient with subtle green hue with a gaussian blur on it. If you look closely you can see that the background pulses very subtly.
