Zero asthma | Design for embarassment

Concept

Zero is an asthma management system that tracks and records the user's respiratory health and medication use. It is the complete redesign of existing aerosol inhalers coupled with sensors that tracks respiratory health and dosage information. Helping teenagers manage their asthma confidently and encourage them to use their inhalers regularly.

Design Direction

A design direction that is sleek minimal and premium with soothing colours are key to incite confidence and promote usage of inhalers. A minimal approach ensures that usability is simple easy to use even in emergency situations.

Design Process

Throughout the design process I singled out problems faced during usage such as triggering medication and indicating visual cues to the user to feel confident and reassured. Finding a way for users to easily trigger medication during an attack, switch medication and how to carry it easily and subtly The design of the inhaler needed to be natural and can be used without thought.

How to use

Zero creates a simple routine for users to follow, without thought users can take their inhaler off the dock starting their day, throughout their day zero will help assist the user by detecting bad air conditions, possible triggers and also record the users health and environmental condition. When the day is over the user can drop Zero back onto its dock and it will refill itself with the patients medications prescribed by the doctor.

Zero provides simple cues that are easy to understand, with only one small light, Zero blinks to alert you of what medication you are using, and vibrates to tell you when you should take your medication.

To keep users reassured zero reminds and keeps a count of how much medication you have left for the day that will only be
displayed briefly when one uses zero to inhale.

Specifications

Zero is sized nicely to fit in your palm, being 80mm tall by 30mm wide for easy concealment and ease of access. Matte materials were chosen to slip in and out of pockets. In contrast with strong metallic colours to provide a strong and durable appearance.

Zero also features a modular system that allows for various attachments, helping users to carry discreetly or place proudly in varying locations for ease of access.
