The Waitress

The concept for this project revolves around the idea thatdifferent typefaces project different meanings and consist of differenttypeface ‘personalities’. Different typefaces communicate different feelings tothe reader. Research has shown that people perceive typefaces to be verydifferent from each other and to reflect feelings like joy, excitement, friendliness or torment. Research has also shown that certain colours arebelieved to evoke different feelings in the reader, whether it is calmness, excitement or trust.

The text of The Waitress is used to portray the effect ofusing different typefaces and colours. The text is split up according to thefeelings that is portrayed in the story and according to these feelings eachpage is design to portray the same feeling by means of the typefaces that isused, as well as the use of certain colours. Each spread is divided into twosegments: the one is the physical design with the specific typeface for theportrayed feeling and differs from page to page, while the other is a constanttable with text in Helvetica that explains the fonts and colours that are usedin the design. This is done in Helvetica to convey neutrality on each page andto explain why the certain typefaces on that page are used in the design.

The specific message that is aimed to be communicated to theaudience is also a constant that features oFor this project the text of The Waitress by jack Zipes was devided into different pages that each sends out a different message and conveys a different mood. The typeface used on each page, as well as the colour, reflects this mood to show the power typefaces has to convey different meanings.
