Reverse Engineering 3D CAD Data

Completed 2011
The clients' previous design company had only supplied a dumb CAD file (a file with no features that you could easily edit).

The client wanted a fully editable Solidworks file; so that they could make adjustments to the design to move forward.

This project was completed in early 2011. Back then, Direct Editing wasn't very common. So this wasn't the easy task it is today.

Also, Direct Editing is great for simple features, but I don't think it handles complex organic surfaces that well. So today I'd probably still have to rebuild the main surfaces from scratch.
Here the old CAD data is in Red and the new fully editable CAD is in Green. It's not perfect, but most outer surfaces are within 0.1mm (which is totally acceptable)
I first created a Master File which contained the main surface bodies.
Some of them were quite organic. and all fully editable.
From there I created the 3 different parts.
You can see all the features were organised into specific folders so it would be easy for the client to find and edit features.
To create the parts, I needed to copy the main surfaces from the Master File.
Those main surfaces and features where then put into a folder called "Main Body"
An example of being able to easily find and access a feature is shown here.
I also added appropriate draft to all surfaces, this way the client wouldn't have to focus on it and the small changes they wanted to do would be much easier for the factory to quickly inspect and add draft to.
