The focus of this book is the garments that protected those who fought in WW1.
This was 1914—1918, the early days when sheer innovation and experimentation
sparked many of the designs. The method in which these garments and protective
pieces were designed is the root of my inspiration. Protective garments serve a purpose
first. When designing, aesthetic comes second, and only if desired or if necessary.
The designer becomes becomes inventor becomes scientist.. The thought process
is different. The design process is specific. Body armour functions as a concealment,
protector and as a tangible guard. The turn of the century included some of the most
beautiful garments and devices I have ever known. In this light, I can look at war armour
as a more of a beautiful thing.
