Mixed Use Development
BA(Hons) Architecture, Third Year
As the second design project in the final year of my degree, we were asked to produce a masterplan for a mixed use development in Potters Fields Park right next to Tower Bridge in London. The brief stated that this should include retail units, a learning centre and residential space. We were then given a choice whether to develop the design of the learning centre or the residential units and, having never worked on this before, I chose the residential. My aim was to ensure that the residents maintained private areas within the urban scheme and that they would not feel that they are continuously overlooked in their own homes. I feel that this was achieved through the three entrance courtyards and the sliding shutters on the facade, allowing privacy when and where they want it.
