The 10 Layer Painting

Matte latex paint on panel
4X5 ft
October, 2016

Challenge: Create 10 (or more) paintings on a single panel that tell a chronological narrative.

Concept: I was interested in exploring dramatic/negative events and the way that they become less serious and more funny/entertaining as time turns them into memories. In my final layer I experimented with cubism as a way to convey the concept of time and the changing of perspectives. Even though I can still think back to that day and remember the panic and shock, it wasn't long lasting and those aren't the dominant emotions I experience when I think back to that day now.

The Narrative: (See the 5th picture) Reading left to right from the top, the layers tell a family narrative of a single day 6 years ago. It was a long, very dramatic and emotional day that dealt with a new family adventure, my sick granddad, our car getting broken into, the loss of sentimental things, trying to stay positive about the upcoming week of vacation that we were determined to have, getting to our destination, and only then realizing that my suitcase that basically contained my entire wardrobe had also been stolen.
Reading left to right starting at the top: chronological progression of the painting.
A sketch study for the final layer.
