Staging - San Siro

The stage is by its nature something temporary, but it’s wrong to think that it ends in itself, that does not leave any trace. All the open space of San Siro is space for a large temporary exhibition, a great scene, in which the events of the entire city of Milan can find their realization. Temporary events will leave trace of themselves in the neighborhood, in the way it is experienced, in the new places that will be discovered, in the new people that will be brought there.
Why "Staging" in San Siro?
The research carried out by "Mapping San Siro" has provided some interesting conclusions for the theme of the temporary staging. The neighborhood has a wide variety of people with different backgrounds, cultures, ages, traditions. It also has a large number of associations with a strong participatory character that develop different activities and initiatives. These associations have a strong impact on the community, but they alone do not have the strength to engage the people. However, the district, according to the inhabitants themselves, is a "very active and energic place”. Moreover, thanks to the recent opening of the M5 with Segesta Metro, the neighborhood has become easily accessible from the whole city. In such a situation, the impact of one or more temporary events would be seen in a positive and creative way by the inhabitants themselves. In this way, the people of the neighborhood could return to live it in all its spaces, while those who will come for the individual event will find reasons to return there in the future. The meetings will also lead the district in a new light: they would show as San Siro is a place alive and vital and, at the same time, would give rise to a new process of regeneration which would meet the strong challenges present. Especially attracting resources to start a local micro-economy related to the organization of the same. The inspection and mapping of the spaces in the neighborhood have shown how it has large spatial potential, both as regards the spaces degraded, inactive both to the presence of some large voids. The structure of the district, with its high density, leaves much space to the ground surface. This high percentage of open space shows there are many places that have the characteristics suitable for the creation and organization of different types of events already present in Milan.

The spaces of the events in Milan
To bring events in the San Siro district does not mean simply organize the event in a given place. The theme is reflected in the size and spatial checks that San Siro can physically accommodate these events, in the careful choice of what type of space is best suitable and how this will be changed by the events, in the use combined of the devices supplied by the references, understanding of the spatial consequences that events will bring to the neighborhood. To do so they were examined some events taking place in Milan and they were broken down analytically, to understand in what kind of space they take place, their size, position, devices and objects used, the people who participate, their number and their way of aggregation within the event itself, and how the event involves the city around him. The events studied were divided into "localized events" and "diffused events." Localized events take place in a specific place of the city and serve both the spatial and architectural features that this particular place has. They attract a large number of people and often require large spaces to be organized. Diffused events take place in different locations within the city. They are obviously more versatile because they can adapt to the characteristics of the different places without changing their own nature. With the same single event they collect fewer people and also require smaller spaces to be organized. Following the analytical breakdown of the various events, they were extrapolated from their specific spatial context in order to understand how they can be relocated to San Siro. These tools, which are the areas of events in Milan, are structured so as to understand which architectural elements and performances of the space are needed to bring them to San Siro. Each of them relates specifically to a particular event and is composed of the objects, the spatial conditions, the measures of the places and the ways that people live it.
The tools are followed by the strategies, they give indications on how and where to develop a project, starting from the tools themselves, in San Siro district. Each event corresponds its strategic location within the neighborhood (or more locations, depending on whether the event is diffuse or localized) chosen on the basis of all the considerations made starting from the strategic instrument to which they relate (size the space involved, type of space, objects to be placed, the aggregation of people around it). The final scenario is thought as if all events were taking place at the same time in the district, an overview is given of how each one would take place within the neighborhood. Great importance is given not only to the arrangement of the event itself, but above all to the people, the way they live the events, into the streets, in the courts, in the green areas, even on the roofs, in every little forgotten corner of San Siro. In this sense, the scenario aims to show, once again, as San Siro can become, thanks to the temporary effects, a lively district, open to the city, an important and unique place in Milan.
