Illustrating Dostoyevsky novels
Illustration to "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyebsky
The proposition of this project was to create illustrations to the Dostoyevsky novels, that will encourage viewers to reflect on themselves and on the novels. The project included illustrations to three different novels – “ The Possessed”, “Crime and Punishment” as well as book covers, posters and inner page spreads. It is supposed that the project will promote Dostoyevsky novels among English-speaking readers.

In my research I tried to focus on several concepts (and all of them had found its reflection later on in my illustrations). These concepts are - the revolution and atheism and Dostoyevsky’s attitude to them, polyphony, and the relationships between tyrant and victim in the Dostoyevsky’s novels.

I was particularly interested in the idea of polyphony. Polyphony in Dostoyevsky’ works was broadly analyzed in the works of Russian philosopher, literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin. Each character in Dostoevsky’s work represent certain idea, and therefore it is not really characters communicating with each other, but ideas, and these ideas speak in individual, recognizable voices. From the early stage of this project I wanted to reflect it in my work, and one of the ways how to do it I saw in working not only with the image, but also with the quotes and so to make combination of images, typography and text produce new meanings.

I tried to work on the border of painting and photography. At first stage I painted my illustrations (very often it was monochrome ink painting), and then the photographic texture and lettering was added using Adobe Photoshop software.
