Experiments in print III

A song poster for Ooops Up by Snap!
The projects in the Experiments in print series are all poster designs, originally produced digitally using Adobe Illustrator. The purpose of Experiments in print was to select a printmaking medium that would better suit the graphics of each poster, and enhance their visual impact. As such, the series was an opportunity to familiarise myself with the technical and aesthetic qualities of different printmaking techniques, and to demonstrate the importance of the medium in the finished product.
Although released in 1990, Ooops Up belongs to the Eurodance genre of music, a fusion of disco, techno and house styles, which emerged from the central European party scene of the late 80s. The graphics of the poster are inspired by the exuberant aesthetic of the period, evident in the video clip of the song.
The song lyrics reference Murphyā€™s law, and describes a day of serial accidents. The poster accordingly depicts a girl in free fall in space, to convey the sense of losing control and being lost in chaos. The space theme also relates to the disco and electronic dance music culture.
The poster was produced in two versions. In the risograph print, the comic-book aesthetic of the graphics is heightened. Inkjet printing, however, produces more glossy, vibrant colours and allows for larger formats.
