Overview
Lisbon’s major controversy is related to the fact that the place branding is not defined, so tourists have no consistency subsequently. The risk of restricting to keep the traditions alive is to lose the identity of the city in time, without even having a city image. The key project goal was to evaluate and improve upon the identity of Lisbon in the public spaces while focusing on the behaviour and opinion of both intern (locals) and extern (tourists) parties. Qualitative methods were applied in order to understand the needs of the tourists in relation with the locals. The research had an iterative nature, using triangulation to conclude to applicable data.

This project brings understanding about the link between the young tourists and the city of Lisbon. Further design projects related to the identity of the city and ways to promote it will bring a huge benefit to the community, by attracting tourists and so on enhance Lisbon’s economic state. The results of the research are revealing the unmet need of mental and physical comfort of the tourists during their stay in Lisbon by translating the Portuguese culture in the “traveller’s language”.
