Hanuman a central figure in the epic Ramayana is venerated by Hindus particularly for his deep devotion to Rama, an Avatar of the deity Vishnu.  As the legend goes Hanuman the brave and mighty king of monkeys helped Rama in his battle against Ravana of Lanka and save Sita as well. Not only was Hanuman credited for his magical powers, but also for his inimitable military strategies like espionage in locating Sita held in captivity and building a bridge across Palk Straits for his simian warriors to invade the island  in a rescue battle.
