Following the great victory against Ravana and having rescued Sita, Rama had doubts about his wife’s chastity after being held captive for a long time by the enemy. Sita reacting in sorrow builds up a fire and leaps into it to prove her innocence. Truth sets her free as she comes out of the fire unscathed. This is recorded in the epic Ramayana while the painting is the artist’s tribute to honesty.
