Identity - Ikko Tanaka

IDENTITY  | IKKO TANAKA

This project was developed during my Design course at school. The aim was to choose a person of interest to you and make a portrait of them, including a quote, their name, and the final result would have to be applied to a t-shirt.
Ikko Tanaka was my person of interest, his work always captured my eye, his essence and style, the composition and decomposition of forms, objects and color appeal to values that i try to pursue in my own work. Minimalistic ways of portraying someone, or something resonate in most of his work, a mix of the japanese style and the modern times that Europe and Design itself were experiencing at the time.
What started with a name became a much more compelling project. As i researched deeply Ikko, i came across so many other references and took a real interest in the Japanese sight on Design. The truth is that, while in school, i consider myself as a person of process, it is a cliché to say that the mountain is not as important as the way to it, but in my case it is at all times true. Getting to Ikko i found out about Japanese philosophy concerning colors, what they mean to them and how far apart they are from our European conception of color and its use, their lifestyle and culture. A whole set of different ways of looking at life, material posessions, religion and of course Design.
