Book / Object analysis: レモン ソーダ soda lemon candy from Japan
2016. 09
Studio project: object analysis.
This project asks students to formally and conceptually analyze an object and to develop a publication that coherently communicates such exploration.
Step 1 Object Analysis
The class was asked to bring to class something important to us, and we were asked to select an object from other people has brought. I choose レモン ソーダ, a soda lemon candy bought in Japan Town.
Requirement: Begin the analysis creating a detailed definition of the object. Consider physical and conceptual relationships, its history and origin, function, origin, cultural importance, etc. Think subjectively, poetically, metaphorically, symbolically.
My potential entries are:
- Candy texture: twisted, cotton candy, frosted, crystal, ...
- Candy ingredients: lemon soda, … , all kinds of flavors, all kinds of colors
- Relationship between natural/original things and artificial imitations
- History: Candy once as medicine
- No actual nutrients/minerals: Void and illusion created by the temporary satisfaction or solution on the surface
- Candy implications: temptation, love, satisfaction, childhood, young, immature, ...
- Foreign Candy, lost in language, but with other means to guess its function: common sense on the design, shape, scale, placement of the object, decontextualization, misunderstanding in extreme situation, ...
- Physical appearance, function: eating process, candy melting, ingredient, candy wrapper
- factory product
- visual implication: satisfaction, hunger,
- candy, sugar, pills, drugs, other drugs ——addiction to pleasure, brain reaction
- merchandise immigration
Step 2 Develop compositions
Requirement: Develop 30 compositions explore a range of visual and conceptual relationships. Include 5 abstractions, 5 line drawings, 5 found images, 5 photographs that you make, 5 collage using text, 5 design or art references.
Some experiments:
Step 3 Focused compositions
Requirement: Select a specific line of inquiry to continue the investigation. Focus on a single material, technique, or relationship.
Step 4 Publication
Organize compositions into a publication.
The book is a process of eating candy. With the increasing number of intake, the book shows the changes happened in our mind, what we assume and its symbolic meaning.
