This film explores excerpts from responses to the Adult Attachment Interview. Developed by Carol George, Nancy Kaplan, and Mary Main in 1984, this is a quasi-clinical semi-structured interview that taps into adult representations of attachment. Main's goal, she said, was to "surprise the unconscious" into revealing itself. The AAI is an empirically validated way of following the transmission of attachment patterns from generation to generation—documenting a kind of psychic lineage from parent to child to grandchild.

The film tests the boundaries of a single experience of "mom", melding stories and images to create insight into both an individual's unique relationship and speak to a universal theme.
